Running the Sahara

In April 2013 I completed the Marathon des Sables, a 150 mile ultramarathon across the Sahara Desert. The event was part of a continual effort to raise $50 000 for Alzheimer’s Research so if you haven’t donated yet then please do by clicking here.

I didn’t really have time to train for the event and only managed a maximum distance of 18 miles before setting off. The 5 consecutive days of running therefore turned out to be my 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th longest runs.

With a lack of training my feet fell to pieces very early on, slowing my pace significantly.

The race was semi-self supported meaning that whilst competitors were given daily water rations, we had to carry all our food and equipment. My bag reached 14.25 kg before adding water! That explains why I am dressed like this…

We were also provided these big dusty tents to sleep in. I had a really noisy sleeping mat which probably annoyed my tent mates but with ear plugs in its hard to hear any complaints.

I may have finished but the scar tissue on my feet and slowly regrowing nails remain. So please don’t forget to donate by pressing the enormous button below.

  2. Hey, Lewis … I was on board, so to speak, while you rowed the eastern seaboard so I better clamber on board again for your jog in the Sahara. I’m already wondering what exotic scheme you’ll be planning next. Love & best wishes … Dave
